Tenth Championships 2015 Review

12 Teams from across Europe were welcomed to Israel at the opening ceremony at the Ra’anana Bowling Club by the President of the Lawn Bowls Association of Israel Mr. Maurice Lavin.

Both venues, Ra'anana and Ramat Gan Bowling Clubs generously provided their magnificent facilities for hosting the competition. The level of hospitality and friendship was second to none and everything was in place for an exciting competition.

As the matches progressed, Guernsey showed remarkable consistency in all three disciplines in the early stages and by the end of Tuesdays play they topped the Overall Team Table, the Mixed Fours and were in contention in both the Ladies and Men’s pairs.

Thursday saw Guernsey still holding on at the top of the Overall Table but now England were only 1 point behind. In the Mixed Fours England turned the tables and now led Guernsey by 1 point. Guernsey were still holding top spot in the Men’s Pairs from the chasing pack and there was all to play for.  In the Ladies Pairs Netherlands led with England and Guernsey in close contention.

It was great to see the progress of the developing nations and Germany continued to impress with the Men taking sets off Spain, Cyprus, Israel and Ireland.  Every neutral in the crowd was hoping that Switzerland could win their first ever set in the European Championships but time was running out.  However, the Ladies went one better and won their last match against the Isle of Man to delight the spectators.

On the final days play all the teams in contention battled for the top spots and medal positions with the highest standard of play entertaining the spectators.

The final results:
Overall Team Champions: Gold for England, Silver for Guernsey, Bronze for Netherlands
In the Ladies Pairs it's Gold for England, Silver for Netherlands and Bronze for Guernsey.
In the Men’s Pairs Gold for Guernsey, Silver for Jersey and Bronze for England.
In the Mixed Fours it's Gold for England, Silver for Guernsey and Bronze for Ireland.
